"The origin of school is that a person shared his experience with others under a tree unconsciously."
-- Louis Kahn
A tree, as an object, casts shade under sunlight, providing a space for rest and communication, and sometimes even serving as a spiritual center for groups of people. However, large-scale deforestation has been an ongoing issue since the Industrial Revolution.
Despite the adoption of numerous laws and regulations to halt deforestation, illegal tree cutting for profit or agriculture remains prevalent in areas beyond legal reach. Additionally, the increasing global demand for raw wood fuels higher consumption of imported wood, making deforestation a worldwide problem. In essence, while laws can curb a small portion of deforestation, much of the responsibility for protecting forests lies with individuals' proactive efforts.
This project aims to remind local communities of the historical significance of trees and alert them to the dangers of further deforestation by turning the remnants of felled trees into a monument. Simultaneously, it serves as an installation focused on the revival of nature. Its appearance evolves from day to night, symbolizing the transition from the present to the future. The entire process reflects nature's self-healing and its coexistence with humanity.
By keeping parts of the wood left on the site, they become reminders of the history of deforestation, in order to remind locals what has happened on this site with wounds of it.
Luminous epoxy resin is chosen to replace missing parts of the wood with, which absorbs radience at day and releases it at night. Luminous epoxy resin is semi-transparent in light surroundings, and glowing when in dark. Neither of the status feel natural. Since wood is an absolutely natural material, the combination of them distincts, showing repairment as a human intervention.
Creepers are planted around the 'root', which would cover the surface of 'trees' as time pass, Making natural and artificial surfaces hard to distinguish, showing the progress of resurrection of Nature.
At the very beginning of the story, trees were target of collection, human and trees co-exist in a peace way. Along with the improvement in industry, trees became target of destruction, human beings started deforestation in large scale in past decades to support vairous kind of wood supplyment. The project steps in here, considering as a protection towards forests, by repairing wounds of the wood with light symbols protecting efforts of human beings. And as time pass, thank to the effort of human beings and nature itself, natural world will be well recovered after wounds. With more and more surface of luminous material is covered by creepers, light from the wood become softer, the project demonstrate iteself as a target of resurrection.
Current Day -- Luminous epoxy resin is semi-transparent in the daytime, giving trunk a sense of floating.
Current Night -- Luminous epoxy resin glows at night, while woods and darkness are mixed together.
Furture Day -- Creepers cover surface of wood and luminous epoxy resin. giving it a tree-like looking, casting shadow at daytime.
Furture Night -- Comparing to current status, the 'tree' emits softer light at night, because of less surface exposed and more diffuse reflection.
